Vintage Paper Ephemera Jewelry Creations Part I

Having grown up traveling to Europe every summer I have such nostalgic feelings when I find vintage scrap book paper. As a child in the 1970s I would buy these new and then later in life I would collect older paper ephemera from the early 1900s. I recently was cleaning out my office space and found my collection. I decided that it was time to either part with them or or use them in a creative fashion. So I decide to create some jewelry using some of the pieces I rediscovered!

The bracelets were also fun to make. Brass bracelet blanks in various sizes. Love the Santa cuff! Will have to make another one. The bee pendant below was made using a vintage chandelier crystal and Victorian paper scrap from a damage old scrap book. You can find the pendant here!

I will leave you with one more creation. This cuff is one of my favorites if I had to have one! All of these pieces are fun to make and are reusing items that would otherwise be thrown out!

B’Sue Boutiques Change It Up Blog Hop

Welcome to the Change It Up Blog Hop sponsored by Brenda Sue Lansdowne of B’Sue Boutiques. The idea of this blog hop was to use one of the following raw brass pieces from B’Sue Boutiques in a unique way or in a way we had never used it before. In addition the style of the piece should be with a  “Vintage Flair”.  You can read more about the background here.

Bloghopcollage

I chose to use the first one in the upper left corner(LF09727).  I had used this piece before as a focal in a necklace.

With this necklace I used the lovely rose ox finish but for my blog hop piece I used the raw brass.  I aged two of the raw brass pieces by soaking in a salt and vinegar solution and then baking them in the oven. This method allows for a lovely rich vintage looking patina.  Here are some examples of other raw brass pieces done using this salt and vinegar method:

rawbrass1

I of course forgot to take photos of the pieces I cut before making them into jewelry but here is an example using the same leaf focal just in the rose ox finish.  I am planning on making another necklace using these in the rose ox finish as well.

What I did:

  1. soaked my cleaned raw brass pieces in salt water and vinegar solution and baked in the oven
  2. cut the focals apart using these shears
  3. sanded and filed the rough edges
  4. sealed the brass with renwax
  5. made jewelry!!!!

Here is what I made:

Using two of the raw brass focals I made a parure.  I used vintage glass faceted cabochons in a very pale lavender color. Part of my inspiration was this lovely vintage necklace:

But I was also inspired my some of the old Hollywood costume jewelry designers, especially Joseff of Hollywood.  Brooches are in style right now and so are bolder necklaces and long, bold earrings.  Here are some more photos for you to enjoy.  You can click on the photos if you want to see an enlarged picture for more detail and then hit the back button to come back to the post!

First photo show the necklace, earrings and brooch, then the brooch and earrings together and then just the necklace.

Having Fun With Solder

I completed two pieces from my recent pile of experimentation. One a bit more simple and the other with a bit more “pizzaz”. ( but not really!)

I have been contemplating if I should add some bling….. what do you think.  As a reminder here is part of the pile I have been creating: solder

The two pieces I finished aren’t even in this shot but here they are:

Thanks for looking and more to come.  Now I need a name for a new shop since these are so different from my vintage assemblage pieces like this

Some Things To Come…………

Some things to come.  Now that my little one is in kindergarten I have some time to do some creating. I do miss having her around though but it is all a part of the cycle of life. So I am embracing it and getting to work!

Some pictures of my works in progress.  Hopefully some lovely jewelry that you all will love to be created with these.

solder3

I am practicing with some rustic soldering of brass pieces.  hand cutting the brass and copper for some of the bases.

Others are pre made brass bases.

solder2

Some vintage brass stampings to add to the bases.

solder1 Torched, burned but will clean up nicely.  Still need some practice but if you like a rustic and unique look to your jewelry then these are for you!

solder

Some birds, cicadas, cat, bulldog, Egyptian revival, sea horse and even a flower that I solder two three leaf petals together and then soldered the blue rhinestone.  Some even have a fossilized appeal which I love! these have been cleaned and filed but still need some more filing, hammering and perhaps some patina to bring out the highlights.  We shall see.

Hope you enjoyed looking. Remember if you click on the photos they will enlarge for better viewing.

Weekly Goals……Completed Stamped Solder Jewelry

Not sure what week this should be but I have completed several pieces from my WIP section of my work area.  Here is a reminder of some of the stamped solder pieces I had started:

I have used some of these but never shared them here as I had wanted to. I guess I met part of my goal :completing half started projects. So here are a few creations:

Making Something New From Old

I have always loved vintage and antique jewelry and accessories. Jewelry easy to wear so no problem but what about shoe clips or dress clips or even that broken piece of jewelry.  I decided that I would start using these old forgotten pieces and create jewelry using them.  One thing I do not do is damage, bend ,shape, drill or alter a perfectly good piece of vintage jewelry. It must be broken or missing something like the other half of the buckle.  I do use vintage dress clips but never ever drill them I just wire wrap a bail and you have a ready pendant.  Here are a few examples:

Works in Progress Week Four: Need Some Summer!

Week four of completing an unfinished piece from my work space. We have had frigid temperatures and snow here so I decided to use the bee! Nothing says summer more than bees buzzing around the beautiful flowers.

Image

For the bee piece:

1.I stamped a honeycomb design into a piece of raw brass.

2. I then colored some Ice Resin to mimic honey and added the resin to the wells in the honeycomb design.

3. After the resin cured I cut the piece out ( but I think next time I will cut the pieces of brass and then add the resin.

4. Riveted the bee onto the honey comb base. The bee was raw brass which I colored using acrylic paints.

5. Used various vintage and new beads to complete the necklace.

This was a fun necklace to make! Now to keep going for week five!

See what I come up with!

Meeting Goals:Works in Pogress Week 2

Last week I said maybe a goal for this year would be to complete all of the works in progress that are cluttering up my work space.

I shared some photos and I did actually complete two pieces.  Now granted for the flower and snail I decided all I wanted was a simple chain so that was no big deal….but then again it is now a necklace so it is a big deal (at least to me)  Here is a collage of the before and afters.

Image

So now onto week 2:

Image

Again both pieces started many months ago maybe even 1/2 a year ago! Both pieces used Ice Enamels and Ice Resin.  The bezel piece I added some vintage enamel pieces into the Ice Resin. love the glass like finish.  Now lets see if I can complete the pieces from week 2!

A Hammer, a Torch and a Rhinestone Bead Ball

Tried something new again! As you can see from my previous posts I can’t seen to decide which medium I want to use so am delving into various different jewelry making methods. Talk about eclectic taste!

For this ring  I cut out a disc from copper metal sheet, torched it , hammered it and added texture. I then riveted it to a vintage brass filigree ring base and secured a vintage rhinestone bead ball into the center.
